The 37-year-old jockey from Streaky Bay on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula added yet another chapter to his illustrious career last season when he won the 2016 Melbourne Cup aboard $11-1 shot Almandin. It was the second time McEvoy had won the race that stops a nation, 16 years after he rode Brew to victory in 2000. In the past 12 months McEvoy has ridden 119 winners including Group Ones including Foxplay in the Coolmore Queen of the Turf and Global Glamour in the Thousand Guineas.

Jess Trengove athletics

Trengove truly announced herself as a force in international marathon running in London in July when she became the first Australian woman to ever finish in the top-10 at a world championships. Facing the might of the African nations including powerhouse runners from Kenya and Ethiopia, the 30-year-old who grew up in Naracoorte in country South Australia finished ninth in the time of 2hrs and 28 minutes which was just 1 minute off the winner. It was the second marathon Trengove ran in London this year after she finished 10th in personal best time of 2 hours and 27 minutes in April.

Erin Phillips football

Phillips made the successful switch from basketball to football this year when she led the Adelaide Crows women's team to the inaugural AFLW premiership. Phillips dominated the seven-game season and played a starring role in the grand final win over Brisbane which made history. As well as helping the Crows to win the flag, Phillips won several individual awards including the league and club best-and-fairest trophies and goal of the year which capped an outstanding debut season.

Jamie Kah

Kah capped another stunning season in the saddle by winning her third John Letts Medal for 2017 which cemented her standing among the best jockeys in the state. A special panel votes 3, 2, 1, after South Australia's two major race meetings each week to determine who was the most outstanding jockey of the day. Kah also set an Australian record for the most winners by a female jockey in a season with her tally of 130 surpassing the 111 which was jointly held by Clare Lindop and Linda Meech.

Alex Carey Cricket

Carey rocketed into the frame for Ashes consideration this summer on the back of a hugely successful Sheffield Shield season with South Australia in 2016-17. The former GWS footballer who made the switch back to cricket broke the Sheffield Shield record for the most dismissals by a wicket-keeper in a season. To cap it off, Carey joined some elite company which includes Adam Gilchrist as a keeper to take 50 dismissals and make 500 runs in the same season. Carey's emergence was a big reason behind the Redbacks making the Shield final against Victoria in Alice Springs.

Kurtis Marschall athletics

On the back of his dramatic rise to the Rio Olympics in 2016, Marschall took another step forward in his promising pole vaulting career in 2017 with an outstanding seventh place finish in the men's final at the world championships. Competing in London at the IAAF World Championships in July, Marschall cleared 5.65m against a quality field. Making his performance even more impressive was that at just 20 years of age he was the youngest competitor in the top eight by three years which bodes well for the future.

Jason Norris golf

The 44-year-old South Australian produced a fairy tale result in August when he won the Fiji International which was the biggest victory of his lengthy career. The win came just a week after he finished work in the pro shop at the Grange Golf Club and was his first major result since the Victorian Open in 2010. Norris carded a five-under par final round of 67 to win the tournament by four shots at 14 under, which secured him direct entry to the European and Asian Tours.

Stephanie Morton Cycling

Morton started her road to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in style this year when she went to the UCI track world championships in Hong Kong and returned with two silver medals. With Anna Meares retiring after the Rio Olympics, Morton and Kaarle McCulloch started a new era of women's cycling in Australia with silver in the team sprint. Morton then backed it up with an impressive silver in the individual sprint, losing the final to reigning Olympic champion Kristina Vogel from Germany.

Scott Thulborn bowls

It has been an outstanding year on the greens in so many ways for Scott Thulborn who last November won the World Champion of Champions singles title on the Gold Coast. The 32-year-old saw off national champions from 20 of the world's top bowling countries to claim the prize. He also represented South Australia's championship winning state side and was part of the successful Australian Jackaroos team that defeated New Zealand in the Tran Tasman Test Series in 2017.

Alex Hill rowing

Alex Hill became the first senior men's rower from the Adelaide Rowing Club to win a FISA world title when he travelled to Florida with the Australian team in September. Hill teamed with Josh Hicks, Spencer Turrin and Jack Hargreaves to win the men's fours final from Italy and Great Britain. It was the first time in 26 years Australia had won that class and came after Hill won a silver medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
